ESRIN gathers, elaborates and archives various data so that it may be accesible for consultation, analysis and interpretation both within and outside of the ESA member states. In particular, with relation to the ERS (European Remote Sensing) Satellite launched July, 1991, by European Space Agency. It was the largest and most sophisticated free-flying satellite built until then in Europe. The key components of the user interface and payload exploitation are based at the ESA facility, ESRIN, in Italy ...
The ERS-1 Central Facility at ESRIN (Frascati, Italy) carries out all user interface functions: cataloguing, handling of user requests, interfacing with the MMCC (Mission Management and Control Center) for payload operations, quality control of data products and sensor performance monitoring.
BDDN was developed since the need was felt for the implementation of a fast delivery service [of ERS-1, ERS-2 products] at ground stations operated for or by ESA ... BDDN was designed similar to a Wide Area Network from its inception [... and] was also conceived as a system for dissemination of ERS-1 high volume Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data.
