What is Physics?

Physics is a key part of science and technology which deals with how and why things behave as they do. It includes such topics as heat, magnetism, elasticity and sound. Physics is concerned with things which vary in size from atoms to galaxies. Atoms which are far too small to be seen directly by the human eye are the building blocks of all living and non-living things in the universe. Galaxies are enormously large collections of stars which can be so far away from us that they are only seen as tiny patterns of bright points of light. Physics gives us answers to questions as:

Why is a red rose red?
Why is aluminium foil so shiny?
Can we get cheap energy from sea waves?
How can radioactive substances be used in medicine?
How does 'Cling film' cling?
What is a rainbow?
How do greenhouses work?
How can you get stripes in toothpaste?
Why does food get hot but plates stay cold in a microwave oven?
Why are there dimples on a golf ball?
How can we measure the smoothness of skin?
How do contact lenses work?
