| The church was erected on the site previously occupied by the cerimonial centre of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital. The Great Temple was rediscovered in 1978 by electricity company workers digging below the corner of Argentina and Guatemala streets, in downtown Mexico City. Only the lower levels are visible, since the Temple was destroyed by the Spniards after the conquest. La cattedrale è stata eretta sul luogo dove sorgeva il centro cerimoniale di Tenochtitlan. La Grande Piramide fu riscoperta nel 1978 durante lavori di scavo per la posa di cavi elettrici. Solo i livelli più bassi della piramide sono visibili dato che il tempio è stato raso al suolo dagli Spagnoli dopo la conquista. |
