The Stud Book of English Fullbred Horses published by the Polish Prince Lubomirski for his Kruszynky Stud has become one of the essential and most fascinating documents in the equestrian history of this century. It was used by Federico Tesio to resister his breeding mares and all their progeny from 1898 (when he bought the Dormello estate and sent his first breeding mare to stud) until 1954, the year of his death.

The volume is in folio, leather bound, and is an ideal aid to the breeder not only in informing him of the genealogy of his breeding mares and the stallions with which they are paired, the dates and products of their coverings, but also provides a series of essential comments on the mares and their offspring. Substantially speaking, the Stud Book was explicitly conceived and drawn up with the intention of stimulating the breeder to use a method of investigation and experiment on his breeding stock, with the results always to hand for continuing research and study purposes.

This is how Federico Tesio used it. Leafing through the pages of the Stud Book, we can see exactly how his philosophy as a breeder became more and more refined, how he was able to note the strong points and defects in every cross and result obtained from it, his firm desire to try out crosses that on paper reflected his ideas and check the success or failure of the products.

To follow up the history of each breeding mare, noting not only her genealogical qualities and track merits, but also carefully observing her movements, form, character and the more or less evident physical problems, as well as the careful observation of each stallion

with which she is mated, without stopping at blood relations, but also attributing primary importance to the forms, character, virtues and defects of the two animals - all this is a lesson that leads to a vision of thoroughbred horse breeding geared towards an increasingly careful selection of breeding stock with the sole objective of producing superior animals.
It could be thought that a working method of this nature would in many cases leave no room for breeding for commercial purposes. This wasn't the case for Tesio. "I'd rather have a single champion than ten good horses", he once said. He considered the market as one of the essential objectives of breeding, and was well aware of how the ability to produce a Michelangelo, an Apelle, Cavaliere d'Arpino, Donatello II, Nearco, Tenerani or Ribot automatically enhanced the value of less famous stable mates of such horses, with a disproportionate growth in their commercial value.
The centenary of the foundation of the Dormello stud farm inspired the decision to provide breeders with an instrument that would help them the pursuit of their activities. This explains the re-publication of what breeding enthusiasts and experts refer to as the Red Book of Dormello. We have only added a second part to the original edition, in which it is possible to record information on the racetrack career of the single animals listed.
