"NEBULOUS STARS"

Here are 3 "nebulous stars": the two brightest were spotted for the first time at Messier's time, while the third - much fainter - was discovered later. The observation is through a pair of giant 20 x 100 binoculars, and exceeds the limits of Messier's old telescopes. We are looking at three galaxies, in fact, catalogued as M 66 and M 65 (bottom, at left and right respectively), and NGC 3628 (top): they are about 25 million light years away.

Ecco 3 "stelle nebulose": le due più luminose furono osservate per la prima volta ai tempi di Messier, mentre quella situata in alto - più debole - fu scoperta più tardi. L'osservazione è stata effettuata attraverso un grosso binocolo 20 x 100, e supera quelli che erano i limiti ottici offerti dagli antichi telescopi di Messier. In realtà, stiamo osservando un trio di galassie, catalogate M 66 ed M 65 (in basso, rispettivamente a sinistra e a destra), ed NGC 3628 (in alto): si trovano ad una distanza di circa 25 milioni di anni luce.
