SKY DARKNESS

Here is tangible proof of the difference between star gazing under a city sky rather than a mountain sky. The three pictures cover the same field, centered on the heart of the galaxy cluster in Virgo: in fact, these are not photographs at all, but computer drawings which better produce the visual impact implied when actually observing the sky. A large pair of 20 x 100 binoculars were used. When observing the sky from a big city (top), all that can be seen in the field of vision are a few weak stars, barely discernible in the illuminated sky. The second observation, taken under a country sky - on a hill actually - is noticeably sharper and less affected by light pollution. The elliptical galaxy M 87 (on the left) is clearly visible. Its light has taken about 55 million years to reach us! On the right, galaxies M 86 and M 84. The third observation is again of the same field of vision as seen from a mountain spot at about 5600 feet: the modest amount of humidity and optimum darkness of the sky really bring out the details of the galaxies; another two weaker galaxies also become visible: NGC 4438 (below) and NGC 4435 (above).

Ecco esemplificata la grande differenza che sussiste fra osservare il cielo stellato da un sito cittadino e da un luogo di montagna. Le tre immagini sono relative allo stesso campo, centrato nel cuore dell'ammasso di galassie della Vergine: non si tratta di fotografie bensì di disegni a computer, in grado di rendere con maggiore fedeltà l'impatto visivo che si riscontra osservando realmente il cielo. E' stato utilizzato un grosso binocolo 20 x 100. Osservando sotto il cielo di una grande città (in alto), non si vede nulla più di qualche debole stella di campo, che si stacca a fatica dal fondo cielo luminoso. Nella seconda osservazione, realizzata sotto un cielo di campagna - anzi di collina - nettamente più limpido e meno illuminato, si rende visibile la galassia ellittica M 87 (a sinistra), la cui luce ha viaggiato nello spazio per circa 55 milioni di anni, prima di raggiungerci; sulla destra, le galassie M 86 ed M 84. Nella terza osservazione, ancora lo stesso campo osservato da una località montana a circa 1700 m di quota: il modesto tasso di umidità e l'ottima oscurità del cielo rendono le galassie assai evidenti; è inoltre visibile un'ulteriore coppia di galassie più deboli, NGC 4438 (sotto) ed NGC 4435 (sopra).
