Polymer Chemistry & Technologies -  Fine Organic Chemistry

Research & Development

Dr. Fabrizio Parodi was born in 1949 in Genoa (Italy), where he got a BS in Industrial Chemistry with top honors in 1968, his University Degree in Industrial Chemistry cum laude in 1974, and his Professional Qualification in 1976.  Since 1976, he has been working in positions of increasing responsibility from scientist to corporate R&D manager, at big corporations in Italy and USA, in applied R&D in the fields of thermoplastic and thermoset resin matrix composites, specialty and engineering plastics and thermosetting resins, organic fine chemicals, and microwave & radio frequency processing of polymeric materials.  In 2000, he started his freelance consulting career, founding & managing an independent R&D and analytical laboratory in 2001-2006.

Montedison Group (1976 - 85), at the Vado Ligure (SV, Italy) facility of Vitrofil SpA Company (at that time an important European manufacturer of glass fibers for reinforcement of plastics, resins and asphalt sheets), as Scientist, Senior Scientist and then Chemical R&D Laboratory Head.   R&D responsibilities:  novel and upgraded adhesives, adhesion promoters, coupling agents, compatibility enhancers & related systems for polymer-polymer and polymer-glass composites and composite structures.

3M Company, Magnetic Memories Sector (1986), at the Ferrania (SV, Italy) facility, and at the Central Research Laboratories of Saint Paul (Minnesota, USA), as Team & Project Leader.  Research area:  polymeric film-formers for heavy-duty magnetic tapes and disks.

Vetrotex-Saint Gobain Company (1987), at the Vado Ligure (SV, Italy) facility as the Chemical R&D Laboratory Head, and Project Leader at the Chambery (France) one.

EniChem SpA, Corporate R&D Division, Materials Science & Engineering (1988 - 95), as the Director of the Laboratory of Polymer Chemistry at the R&D centers of Milan and Novara (Italy), and Project Leader at EniChem Americas, Inc., R&D laboratory, in Princeton (New Jersey, USA) [EniChem Company = the chemical & petrochemical arm of the ENI Group, i.e. the Italian, National Oil & Gas Company].  Main R&D activities:  novel engineering plastics and high-temperature, fast-curing resins for structural composites and electrical/electronic components;  physics and chemistry of super-fast microwave processing of plastics and resins.

Saiag SpA and Saiag Industries Srl (1996 - 2000), as the New Materials R&D Manager, and research laboratory head in Milan (Italy)  [Saiag Group = an international group of 24 companies manufacturing rubber goods, electrical wires and cables, plastic compounds, packaging materials, etc.].  R&D fields:  thermoplastic rubbers;  specialty additives and technologies for UHF-enhanced processing of rubbers.

independent chemical consultant and industrial R&D expert:  since 2000 [Milan (Italy): 2000-2003; Genoa (Italy): 2004 to present].

owner & director of the contract R&D laboratory  fpchem.com :  Milan (Italy): 2001-2003;  Genoa (Italy): 2004-2006.

since 2008:  Science & Technology Expert  for:  i) European Commission  [Directorate General for Research and Innovation & REA-Research Executive Agency] (Brussels, Belgium);  ii) EUREKA Secretariat (Brussels, Belgium);  iii) M-ERA.NET [Internationl Network of the European Research Agency for the Advancement of Materials Science and Engineering];  iv) Danish Agency for Science, Technology & Innovation [Innovation Fund Denmark] (Copenhagen, Denmark).

Main Fields of Professional Expertise

  Synthesis of condensation polymers and oligomers (polyurethanes, polyureas and isocyanate-derived polymers in general, aliphatic and aromatic polyesters, polyamides, polysulfones, and polycarbonates);

  Reactive processing of polymeric materials (in particular, homo- and copolyolefins, and related blends);

  Preparation and physical chemistry of aqueous emulsions and colloidal dispersions of polymers and resins;

  Synthesis of organic fine chemicals (isocyanates and related derivatives, epoxies, imides, organo-silanes, amino-, azido- and hydrazido-compounds, specialty quaternary ammonium and phosphonium compounds, sulfones, sulfoxides and sulfonamides, complexes of transition metals, Grignard and Friedel-Crafts chemistry, etc.);

  Chemistry and chemical physics of polymer interfaces & interphases (i.e., compatibilization and adhesion between polymers, and between polymers and inorganic materials);

  Micro-mechanics of polymer matrix composites (both thermoplastic and thermoset);

  Finishing/sizing compositions of glass and other mineral fibers (and mineral fillers) for reinforcement of plastics and thermosetting resins;

  Chemistry, curing catalysis, processing and applications of thermosetting resins (in particular, epoxy resin systems, isocyanate-functional resins, unsaturated polyesters, maleimide and nadimide resins);

  Physics & chemistry of fast microwave and radio frequency processing of plastics, resins, rubbers, and related composites.  Specific physical sensitizers and chemical catalysts for microwave-enhanced processing of polymers, polymerization processes and organic syntheses;
