IMMOVABLE HEARTH II FRAME 2

IMMOVABLE HEART  II
"THE SIEGE OF IMPHAL"
FRAME2

 Historical Background

The Royal Air Force High Command comunicates to the soldiers of the Commonwealth involved in the siege of Imphal:

"The Imphal Garrison has been cut out from the rest of our forces and is now under siege, after many days of fierce combat and the damage caused by enemy air raids our men fightng there are running low on supplies.  The only way to resupply our soldiers is by the air. An emergency  airstrip at all costs !"
Background:
7th March 1944 : The Japanese begin the Imphal-Kohima offensive from northern Burma into Assam, India.
14th March 1944:  The British are forced to withdraw towards Imphal in Assam, while fighting a bitter rearguard action …A Japanese advance through Burma has isolated the British garrison at Imphal.During the three-month siege, 150,000 men have had to rely entirely on air supply for their survival. More than 400 tons of stores have had to be flown daily into a heavily guarded valley, with only three squadrons of Spitfires available for air defense.

During the last week 6 Dakotas (C47s) were lost in combat while trying to reach and resuply Imphal.
Even after such losses it was impossible for the Allies to suspend the stream of supplies from the air, the Far East RAF high command decided to convert Bostons and Wellingontons bombers into transport planes and to escort them with all the disposable fighters in that area.
But even such a strong air convoy was going to have an hard journey,  as Hiro Hito's Zeros were waiting for them.
