Paolo Lo Re - electric guitar

Giuliana Cangemi - vocals

Paolo was born in Genoa in 1960. He approaches the study of guitar at the age of twelve, following his father’s example which handles a classic guitar in relax moments singing the songs of the great classics of the time (F. Sinatra, B. Crosby). While he attends a classic guitar class at a genoese school, Paolo starts playing in a lot of local bands. At that time the repertoire goes from Santana afro- Cuban rock to rock’ n’ roll, from Italian music (Battisti in the head) to bossa nova, which is his first love.
After experiencing as orchestral in dance music bands, in 1984 Paolo starts attending “Louisiana Jazz Club” in Genoa, which is one of the most well known and appreciated jazz clubs in Italy. In particular, he attends the guitar class of Alessandro Armanino of which later becomes the collaborator.
In those years of intensive study of the classics of jazz guitar, Paolo uses a pick and in particular he transcribes Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, Tal farlow and Wes Montgomery becoming a permanent element of “Guitar Ensemble” group. He attends workshops from the most important American guitar players like B. Kessel, J.Pass, K. Burrell and T. Farlow.

Giuly, a natural talent, is keen on singing since she was a child. At home he listens to a lot of good music, especially the music her grandfather brings from America and Brazil, even if at home nobody was a musician. In the first years of high school she attends a music school where she starts singing jazz. In the mean time she starts playing in local bands, singing the most dissimilar genres, starting with rock music to arrive, later, to jazz. Inspired by the great jazz singers (Ella, Sarah Vaughan…) she improves her vocal technique and her improvisation. In the mean time she carries out her scientific studies and in 1997 she takes the degree in Biological Science and she starts working in a research lab where she continues studying…

The meeting between Paolo and Giuly is in June 1995 during preliminaries for the make up of a new jazz band. This project failed and the two decided, as a temporary solution, to play in duo. Paolo continues to use the pick and the repertoire includes whole albums of Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, standards and popular songs re-elaborating music of the most dissimilar origins.
In 1996 the duo discovers the magic world of Tuck and Patti music listening to “Learning how to fly”, it’s an enlightenment! This is what they want to play! Paolo leaves his pick inside the drawer and starts using his right hand. Those years are tiring, whole days passed listening to and transcribing Tuck’s prowess. The gigs in the clubs continue and are a training, the union of the twos extends to private life.
Their work is rewarded in 1997 when they win a prize as the best emerging jazz group in “Sori Jazz Festival” voted both by a popular jury and a jury composed by experts of the field. At the musical contest they present original arrangements of standards made in a Tuck and Patti manner. Motivated by this success Paolo and Giuly continue to have gigs in clubs and festivals all over Italy.

In 1999 and 2000 Paolo and Giuly take part to the workshop “We Love Jazz” in the classes of guitarist Sandro Gibellini and singer Shawn Monteiro. Paolo wins the prize as the best jazz guitar student and a scholarship. In the same years, at least, Paolo and Giuly know Tuck and Patti, in 1999 in Imola during a T&P’s concert and in 2000 in Terni during “Umbria Jazz Spring”. Their friendship was born in 2001 during “JazzCampWest “ in La Honda, California where T&P were artists in residence and where they taught for all the week. During JazzCampWest Paolo and Giuly are appreciated by the faculty and the students. Giuly is selected for the ”vocal intensive” class of David Stroud (vocal technique) and Rebecca Parris (jazz vocals). She also attended Rhiannon (improvisation, singing over changes), Ledisi (blues vocals) and Patti Cathcart classes. Paolo attends Tuck Andress and Ricardo Peixoto (Brazilian guitar) and Mark Levine (jazz theory) classes. Back in Italy Paolo and Giuly enter in the recording studio to record their first CD “We’ll meet” with the title of the song inspired by the “Jazz Camp” experience and reviewed by Tuck and Patti themselves!
Paolo and Giuly continue to have gigs in clubs and festivals and they teach fingerstyle jazz guitar and vocals at “Guitarland” in Genoa.

Good reviews:

"Paolo and Giuly have honored us greatly by saying that we have inspired
their music. But now the world will listen and be able to hear that they
have forged new ground, singing and playing with a voice that is all their
own. Giuly's infectious, unabashed joy in singing shines through even as you
are dazzled by her magnificent technique. Paolo is the perfect complement,
using his virtuosity to keep the delicate balance of head and heart, leading
and accompanying, and surrounding Giuly with a colorful wash of sensitive
rhythms and sounds. But let the music speak for itself. Sit back, suspend
your judgement and let the music welcome you into the soulful world of Paolo
and Giuly."

“Paolo is a fingerpicking virtuoso, certainly one of the best guitar players in the field in North Italy while Giuly is a singer with a warm and extended voice. They gigged in the best Italian jazz clubs with their wide repertoire and their extraordinary accord. [ …] they don’t limit themselves to the execution of the classics but they adapt themselves to the audience taste and to the environment of the club. It will be a lesson of guitar and vocal style for the keen of the field and an extraordinary show for people who doesn’t know them, Giuly is also a very good entertainer, involving and nice”

Il Secolo XIX, 14th July 2001

“The jazz duo was born from the meeting between the singer Giuly and guitar player Paolo Lo Re. Together they won the first prize in the first edition of Sori Jazz Festival emerging jazz players prize. A lucky mix: Lo Re’s the musical competence and Giuly’ nice voice make this duo remarkable: Giuly, in particular is one of the best jazz local vocalists”
