Travel in China

Beijing & Chengde

November 2003

In November my parents came to visit and I joined them in Beijing on a week-end. I left Changzhou wearing a T-shirt and when I got off the train the next morning I found Beijing covered by snow.

Despite the cold, the weather was excellent and we went to Mutianyu (my fourth time on the Great Wall and I'm still enjoying it!). I continued by train to Chengde (about 200km north-east of Beijing). Chengde has been the summer residence of the emperor in the 18th Century and its palace and gardens are one of the most relaxing spots I've seen in China. The park is huge and all around it there are 8 temples in very different styles (there is even a miniature of the Potala Palace). In the background of some pictures you will notice Sledgehammer Rock, a peculiar, huge rock that watches over Chengde...
