Travel in China

Pingyao

(August 2003)

Just South of Taiyuan in Shanxi, Pingyao is a small, historic town that has been preserved from the otherwise usual transformation into modern metropolis. Today it is a touristic town, one of the favourites among backpackers, with good reasons: there are cobblestone streets, beautiful old buildings with relaxing courtyards, red lanterns everywhere (the movie "Raise the Red Lantern" was shot near here), a dozen historical sites and some impressive old walls aroud the old town.

We really enjoyed Pingyao and its food - a selection of "miantai" dishes (similar to muslim noodles) - and had a couple of relaxing days, strolling around town, watching people play mah Jong, playing Maraffone in temples and having a very painful foot-massage.
