Pressphotoitalia/Galleryonline© is the first photogallery specialized in photojournalism and deliberately created for the communication, diffusion and sale via Internet. |

Althought its fondamental role
in the affirmation of the photographic medium as vehicle in the mass communication,
the photojournalism is still a neglected genre, often discriminated by
the critics and art historians because of its presumed lack of artistic
value. Nevertheless is out of question that few photographic genres like
photojournalism have had a so fondamental role in the creation of a collective
identity, in the common habits, in the so called contemporary imaginary.
Becouse of its connections with history, politics, sociology, the photojournalism
must be considered the first step towards the creation of the "global village"
made possible nowadays by the advanced technology of mass communication.
Sometimes we forget that before the TV and computer age, photojournalism was the unique source of visual informations and an important instrument of testimony and documentation of all those facts that otherwise would have gone lost. But in this last period, thanks to the interest of critics, collectors, cultural institutions, the photojournalism is revalued for its importance, and its peculiar role in the history of photography, and all the most important museums, institutions and departments of visual arts have a specific section dedicated to photojournalism. |
Pressphotoitalia/Galleryonline©
can be defined as a thematic gallery, with a specific interest in the italian
photojournalism.
In Italy, photojouralism spread without
delay in comparison with the european experiencies. Born in the beginnin
of the twentieth century in various reviews and magazines like «Il
Secolo XX», «L’Illustrazione Italiana», «Gli Avvenimenti»,
during the 30s and 40s, matured its style around the group of reviews like
«Il Secolo Illustrato», «Omnibus», «Tempo»,
«Panorama», and it had a period of maximum ressonance in the
years between 1945 and 1970. This was a very complex period for the italian
history; after the fall of fascist regime, among the people there was an
encrising interest and diffusion of the new reviews, tabloids, magazines,
in which photojournalism of course played a great role. Patellani,
Crocenzi, Carrese, Meldolesi, Cisventi, Bavagnoli, Dondero, De Biasi, Branzi,
Garrubba, Pinna, Nicola e Antonio Sansone, Rea, Cascio, Contino, Volta,
Moroldo, Cagnoni, Secchiaroli, Sellerio, Berengo Gardin, Scianna, Di Paolo,
Roiter, D’Alessandro, Pino, Lucas, D’Amico, just to mention few names of
the most rapresentative photographers of the period, working in reviews
like «Il Politecnico», «Tempo Illustrato», «Vie
Nuove», «L’Europeo», «Il Mondo», «Epoca»,
«Le Ore», «L’Espresso», «Panorama».
Expecially in the 40s and the 50s, photojournalism contributed decisely
to the birth and formation of the national visual culture, better known
abroad under the label of Neorealismo,
a cultural phenomenon mostly acknowledged for the literary and cinematographic
aspects than for all its direct implications in the italian photography.
