Already in his professional beginnin,
in the field of documentary film, was caracterized by the same interest
on this subject matter. But only through Franco Cagnetta's and Ernesto
De Martino's example, Pinna showed his own sincere bent towards the
anthropological point of view, supplying the researchers with a complete
photographic documentation about the popular habits and religious rites
he felt destined not to survive. Together with his working method, in wich
the photographic image is always supported by a rigorous and philological
text, Pinna elaborates his favorites thematics focuzing his attenction
on the concest of the "type" and "story".
Human subject is treated with great sensitiveness, through
the instruments of physiognomy and biography, as for instance in the exellent
reportages from Calabria, realized in 1953 and in 1957 for the magazine
"Noi Donne".
Pinna's vision of the southern Italy has nothing to do
with the common idea of a depressed area waiting to be colonized by the
industrial progress. The South, the pureness of its landscape, the dignity
of its people, an empathetic representation of a humanity still linked
to the ancient roots, indifferent to the seductions of modern civilization
